Dear Friends of Life After Hate,

This month’s attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego, in which two teenagers killed three people before taking their own lives, follows a disturbing pattern of violence targeting places of worship such as the eleven people killed at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018, the nine killed at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston in 2015, and most recently five lives ended in the San Diego mosque shooting. It does not have to be this way. No one should fear for their life while attending a place of worship. Yet we continue to see a troubling rise in ideologically motivated hate and violence directed at religious communities.

At Life After Hate, this is the work we confront every day. In partnership with the justice system, families, and the support systems of those at risk of causing harm, we intervene at the most critical moments and prevent tragedy before it happens.

Life After Hate works directly with individuals who are at risk of committing acts of targeted violence, including those who are planning similar acts or who are being groomed toward violence. This mission is why our organization was founded, and why, for the past 15 years, we have remained committed to this vital work.

In gratitude,
Heather and Shannon

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we have taken time to acknowledge that often, mental health issues such as trauma lead to social isolation that causes individuals to get on the path that leads to hate-fueled violence. We also provide avenues for our own team to increase prosocial behaviors to support their mental health while working in such a difficult field. This work is challenging, but very needed. It is important that we not only take care of participants to ensure a safer society, but also take care of one another.
